Riding on career-best knocks by captain Sanjay Raul and Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Orissa gained five points against Maharashtra in their last Ranji Trophy Super League Group-A match, which ended in a draw on the fourth and last day at Bareabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
Host Orissa secured the five points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Maharashtra settled with three points. Asserting supremacy from the start, Orissa batsmen scored two centuries and three fifties in this match.
Raul hit a majestic 173 (394b, 12x4) to steer Orissa to a first-innings total of 432 after they won the toss and chose to bat. Pravanjan Mullick (64) and Pradip Das (67) consolidated the innings with a half-century each.
In reply, Maharashtra made 339 and conceded a lead of 93 runs. Debutants Sanjay Satpathy and Baljit Singh were joint-most successful bowlers for Orissa, claiming three wickets apiece. After taking the sizeable lead, Orissa chose to bat through the rest of the match.
Capitalising on the opportunity, Parida notched his first century in first-class cricket. When the match ended in draw, Orissa were 231 for five in their second innings and Parida unbeaten on 111 (238b, 14x4). Skipper Raul joined the party, adding a half-century (55) to his first-innings hundred.
